Training & Speaking

I run workshops and training sessions on journalism, freelance work and media literacy, as well as representation, stereotypes and language in the media. I also speak and moderate panels at conferences and public events, in both English and Italian.

Training

I’ve been training journalists and media professionals since 2019, both online and in person.

My workshops cover the practical side of journalism – from finding and pitching stories to working with international publications – as well as some of the questions shaping the profession today, including representation, language and AI.

Sessions can be developed around the needs of organizations, newsrooms, associations and other groups.

  • Laboratorio di giornalismo femminista
    Since 2022, I’ve been one of the trainers of this workshop by Femminismi Contemporanei, which explores journalistic writing through feminist methodologies, from finding an angle and developing a story to representation, sources and language.
  • Fare la freelance. Ma come?
    A workshop on the practical side of freelance journalism, from finding opportunities and building professional relationships to navigating the realities of independent work.

I’ve also contributed to professional training for journalists on gender representation, stereotypes, discrimination and the reporting of gender-based violence.

    Participated in a discussion on how freelance journalists can best form a working relationship with their editors, ways in which writers can tailor pitches to different mediums and outlets, how early-career journalists can secure commissions and more.

  • Speaker – Panel 7 – Decolonizzare i nuovi mondi mass mediali, Forum delle Giornaliste del Mediterraneo 2023, Bari, Italy, 24 November 2023
    Participated in a panel on the ethical duty to provide information free from discrimination and stereotypes, especially towards minorities and women, focusing on understanding detection mechanisms to recognize and dismantle inherent sexist, racist, and homophobic biases in media narratives.

  • Speaker – Panel 3 – Discriminazione algoritmica e oppressione: L’algor-etica possibile, Forum delle Giornaliste del Mediterraneo 2023, Bari, Italy, 23 November 2023
    Participated in a panel on the ethical and sociocultural implications of artificial intelligence, questioning the types of human intelligence it replicates, its handling of stereotypes, ethical frameworks, and potential biases or amplifications of societal issues.

    Participated in a panel on “AI and journalists: How to use artificial intelligence tools in reporting”, with Derek Willis, a data expert teaching at the University of Maryland, and moderated by Jeff South, associate professor emeritus, Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University.

    Moderated an event, organized on the weekend of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25), about how words and narratives can contribute to a culture of violence.

Participated in a panel discussing the challenges presented to the media covering male violence against women, and especially femicide.

  • Speaker – International Education & Culture Week, London, UK, 2014
    Presented the personal multimedia journalism project ‘Where Are All the Women?’ about the underrepresentation of women artists in galleries and museums.
